As a first novel, A Breath of Fresh Air is a great attempt.

I appreciated the insights into Indian culture and marriage, but the novel didn’t quite “jell’ or live up the promise of its early pages.

People are slowly believing that women can be treated as equals as Anjali’s husband is just one such wonderful man who believes in his wife.

Having a glimpse into the life of woman in India as she enters an arranged marriage which is loveless or the fear of a mother who might have to live with a son and daughter-in-law who hates her are extremely interesting. I knew that it’s okay for the husband’s to hit their wife and divorce is a big no no. No trivia or quizzes breaht. Will definitely be reading the rest of the books by Malladi.


I could not put it down. Not heard of this writer. The book centers more on a woman’s role in India inthen on the Bhopal gas tragedy. There’s a problem loading this menu right now. When the book ended, I was left feeling like it was superficial, and I was watching the characters from the outside, not really understanding anyone’s perspective.

I especially enjoy how the author has entwined real stories such as the gas leak and the assassination of Indira Ghandi into the fiction of the story. Sep 18, Gerri rated it really liked it. An awful marriage, a gas tragedy and a forbidden divorce transforms Anjali from a naive girl to a strong woman. It offers a beautiful insight into Indian culture and traditions and it talks about how divorce is looked down upon in Indian society still.

The characters in the story are well built and take us through their emotions, perspectives and the circumstances that intentionally or unintentionally might have influenced or transformed Anjali!

A Mallari for Happy Mothers: The strength of the characters made this book an excellent read for me.
