Tec presents the life warts and all, even presenting detail about how the locals felt about the partisans.
Tec seems to be trying to paint a picture of partisan life and write a biography of Tuvia Bielski, as a biography the book fails.

It is that story which is told by Holocaust scholar Nechama Tec, in this defiancr edition of Defiancepublished by the Oxford University Press to coincide with the release of a new and controversial film based on the book and starring Daniel Craig as Tuvia Bielski. The account herein is all the more heroic for its humanity, its struggle, and its imperfection. But they not only survived they fought against the Nazis and they started a mission to save as many Jews from extermination as they could.
It was tough to place the partisan movement nchama the forests alongside the larger events at the time, even brief mentions giving context would have helped immensely, but this wasn’t done.

We are often tempted to dismiss critiques leveled against them, afraid that the good they achieved will be overlooked. More than 1, Jews comprised a forest community surviving on scant food, clothes and supplies. For a long time I have been looking for a version of the Robin Hood story to blow my socks off. The Bielski Partisans by Nechama Tec. It saddens me that this glimmer of hope during one of the darkest times in the world’s history was dfeiance covered in any of my history classes during high school or college. I did not meet Liev Schreiber during my brief visit, as he was away at the time, but just watching his performance of nrchama scenes conducted in Russian makes clear that he, too, shared the level of professionalism I observed in his colleagues.
Grown-ups want their heroes to prove that they can exist just as vitally in the real world as they can in an idealized one as children do. Very defjance, and the closest to being a ‘Hollywood-style adventure’ is the chapter which records the Big Hunt when members of the otriad hid in a swamp to escape Nazi pursuit. Many artists—often discouraged adults looking for a hero themselves—rush to give the people what they want, and pick up a nice fat paycheck in the process.

Something I very much liked about this book, and not easy to transfer onto film, was the way Tec handles the conflicting viewpoints and memories of her numerous story-tellers. Oct 17, Westminster Library rated it really liked it Shelves: I particularly enjoyed the chapter entitled The Fate of Women which describes women’s roles in the otriad, as well as a look at sexual mores.
The story is a fascinating one which deserves to be better known.
